The Creative Surau Community, established in 2023, has grown from 8 to over 80 members and received formal recognition from the Regional Cultural Preservation Center (BPK) of West Sumatra. Despite its visible social impact, no prior quantitative study had measured the extent to which its group communication influences community social concern. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach with simple random sampling. The population comprised 700 residents aged 16–18 years across eight sub-villages (jorong); 88 respondents were selected using Slovin’s formula. Data were collected via a structured four-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation following confirmed non-normal data distribution. Results revealed a strong, statistically significant positive correlation (rₛ = 0.734, p < 0.01), with group communication explaining 53.9% of the variance in social concern (R² = 0.539). Both variables were rated ‘good’ overall (Variable X: grand mean = 3.35; Variable Y: grand mean = 3.34). These findings confirm that structured, norm-based, and goal-oriented group communication in value-based community organizations can serve as an effective instrument for fostering social concern.
Fitri Roihanah Nasution Oktri Permata Lani Copyright (c) 2026 Fitri Roihanah Nasution, Oktri Permata Lani https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 1 8 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17022 Anonymous Account @menfess.isipadangpanjang and Self Disclosure of ISI Padang Panjang Students https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17023
This study examines the influence of the anonymous Instagram account @menfess.isipadangpanjang on the self disclosure of students at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts Padang Panjang (ISI Padang Panjang). The account provides a platform for students to share messages, personal stories, and emotional experiences without revealing their identities. This study employed a quantitative correlational design. The population comprised 998 followers of the account; 91 respondents were selected via proportionate stratified random sampling using Slovin’s formula. Data were collected through a four-point Likert-scale questionnaire validated via Aiken’s V and Pearson Product Moment, yielding 13 valid items for Variable X and 22 valid items for Variable Y, with Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.917 and 0.948 respectively. Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality testing confirmed non-normal data distribution, necessitating Spearman’s rank correlation as the primary inferential test. Results indicated a significant moderate positive correlation (ρ = 0.383, p < 0.01). Supplementary regression analysis yielded R² = 0.485, indicating the anonymous account explains 48.5% of the variance in self disclosure. Findings suggest that anonymity, institutional embeddedness, and selective self-presentation in social media environments encourage students to express feelings, thoughts, and personal experiences more openly.
Azra Nayla Andri Maijar Copyright (c) 2026 Azra Nayla, Andri Maijar https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 9 17 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17023 TikTok Usage Intensity and Social Interaction: A Study of KPI Students at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17024
This study examines the relationship between TikTok usage intensity and social interaction among Islamic Communication and Broadcasting (KPI) students at UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar. Preliminary observations revealed that 100% of KPI students actively use TikTok, with 93.1% spending more than three hours daily and 95.8% reporting that TikTok usage disrupts their face-to-face social interaction. This study employed a quantitative correlational design with descriptive analysis. Using simple random sampling via Slovin's formula (10% margin of error), 74 respondents were drawn from 291 active KPI students. Data were collected through a four-point Likert scale questionnaire. Instrument validation via Pearson Product Moment correlation (n = 32; r-table = 0.349) yielded 9 valid items for Variable X and 19 valid items for Variable Y, with Cronbach's Alpha of 0.807 and 0.924 respectively. As Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality testing confirmed non-normal data distribution (p = 0.035), Spearman's rank correlation was applied as the primary inferential test. TikTok usage intensity was categorized as high (Grand Mean = 3.12), and social interaction also as high (Grand Mean = 2.79). Hypothesis testing revealed a significant negative relationship between the two variables (r = −0.244; p = 0.036), indicating that higher TikTok usage intensity is associated with lower social interaction quality. This study recommends that students manage social media usage time wisely to preserve the quality of face-to-face social interaction.
Azizah Hamid Marhen Copyright (c) 2026 Azizah Hamid, Marhen https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 18 25 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17024 Da’i Strategies in Delivering Da’wah for Adolescents’ Moral Improvement in Tanjuang Alam Nagari https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17027
This research examines the strategies of Islamic preachers (da’i) in delivering da’wah to improve the moral character (akhlak) of adolescents in Nagari Tanjuang Alam, Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra. The study is motivated by the phenomenon of declining adolescent morality, marked by weakened religious awareness, reduced social ethics, and increasing influence of digital media and Western popular culture. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving 17 informants: seven da’i, four mosque administrators, and six adolescents. Data analysis followed Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The main theoretical framework is Mohammad Ali Aziz’s da’wah theory, encompassing three strategies: da’wah bil lisan (verbal), bil hal (exemplary conduct), and bil kitabah (written/digital). Findings indicate that bil lisan strategy—implemented through weekly youth religious gatherings, religious lectures, and personal mentoring with persuasive approaches—effectively improves adolescents’ Islamic knowledge yet requires consistency. The bil hal strategy, realized through moral exemplification and direct involvement in social activities, proves the most effective in forming behavioral change. The bil kitabah strategy, conducted via social media platforms (Facebook, TikTok, Instagram), has yielded positive responses but remains suboptimal and requires greater creativity and consistency. These three strategies are complementary and collectively contribute to adolescents’ moral improvement in the community.
Zainil Bakhri Irman Copyright (c) 2026 Zainil Bakhri, Irman https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 26 33 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17027 Communication Strategies in Pasambahan Maurak Selo of Mando’a Manujuah Hari Tradition https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17028
This study examines communication strategies employed in the Pasambahan maurak selo procession within the Mando’a manujuah hari tradition at Nagari Tanjuang Barulak, Batipuh District, Tanah Datar Regency. Pasambahan maurak selo is a form of Minangkabau traditional communication delivered in a grief context, particularly during collective prayers on the seventh day following a death, carrying symbolic, social, and spiritual values. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a communication ethnography method. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with traditional leaders (ninik mamak), the village head, the Kerapatan Adat Nagari chief, and youth representatives, along with documentation. Data validity was ensured through triangulation, member checking, audit trail, and prolonged engagement. The findings reveal five interconnected communication strategies in Pasambahan maurak selo: symbolic, affective, representative, contextual, and participatory. Analysis using Hymes’ S.P.E.A.K.I.N.G. model confirms the procession constitutes a fully structured speech event. The study concludes that Pasambahan maurak selo is not merely ceremonial, but a mature and complex cultural communication strategy that maintains social harmony, manages collective grief, and preserves the traditional and Islamic values of the Minangkabau community.
Rofi’ul Walid Riki Rikarno Copyright (c) 2026 Rofi’ul Walid, Riki Rikarno https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 34 42 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17028 Representation of Motherhood in Film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap: A Roland Barthes Semiotic Analysis https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17030
This study analyzes the representation of motherhood in the Indonesian film Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (2022), directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research focuses on how denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings construct the social position of mothers within the patriarchal Batak family structure. A qualitative descriptive method was applied, with data sources consisting of 20 selected scenes featuring Mak Domu (portrayed by Tika Panggabean) as the central character. Barthes’ three-level semiotic analysis was applied to identify sign systems across denotation (literal meaning), connotation (cultural and emotional meaning), and myth (second-order signification). Findings reveal that the film constructs Mak Domu through two dominant patterns. First, the film reproduces patriarchal myths of the Batak mother as guardian of family unity, bearer of emotional burdens, and sacrificial figure who sustains domestic stability. Second, the film also negotiates these myths by representing Mak Domu as a moral agent who possesses bargaining power within the domestic sphere. The study concludes that the representation of motherhood simultaneously reflects and contests patriarchal Batak culture, functioning as a space of ideological negotiation between tradition and change in contemporary Indonesian cinema.
Wahyudi Siti Fadilla Copyright (c) 2026 Wahyudi, Siti Fadilla https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 43 50 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17030 Visual Strategy Analysis of Indomie Advertising and Its Influence on YouTube Audiences https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17110
This study analyzes the visual strategies used in the Indomie advertisement titled “Akan Kuhadapi Dunia, Tapi Indomie Goreng Jumbo Dulu!” and their influence on audiences on YouTube. Indomie is one of Indonesia’s most recognized instant noodle brands, known for consistent and emotionally resonant visual advertising. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with supporting quantitative engagement data from YouTube metrics. The data object is a 15-second digital advertisement uploaded to the official Indomie Indonesia YouTube channel. Visual elements—including color, typography, layout, character expression, product display, and cinematographic technique—were analyzed using the AIDIA (Attention, Interest, Desire, Information, Action) framework. Engagement data (views, likes, comments) were gathered as supporting indicators of audience response. Results indicate that Indomie’s visual strategy effectively employs the full AIDIA cycle: the brand’s signature colors (red, yellow, green) capture immediate attention; a relatable stress-relief narrative sustains interest; close-up food photography generates desire; concise product packaging shots convey information; and massive engagement (over 65 million views) confirms audience action. The study concludes that a cohesive visual communication strategy combining color identity, emotional narrative, and food aesthetics is central to Indomie’s digital advertising effectiveness. These findings offer practical guidance for visual communication designers and digital marketers seeking to maximize audience engagement on social media platforms.
Nadila Putri Muhammad Teddy Abadi Copyright (c) 2026 Nadila Putri, Muhammad Teddy Abadi https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 51 58 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17110 Editing Rhythm in Building Dramatic Tension in the Film Qodrat 2 https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17120
This study examines how editing rhythm builds dramatic tension in the film Qodrat 2. The research focuses on the use of editing rhythm in shaping the dynamics of tension and release in several scenes that show significant changes in conflict. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using Karen Pearlman's editing rhythm approach, particularly through the aspects of pacing, timing, and trajectory phrasing. The research data were obtained through film observation, documentation of the analyzed scenes, timecode recording, literature review, and interviews with the assistant editor of Qodrat 2. The results indicate that editing rhythm in Qodrat 2 plays a role in building, sustaining, and releasing tension through changes in shot duration, the speed of shot transitions, movement, and the development of dramatic energy within scenes. Pacing is the most dominant aspect in building tension, particularly through the acceleration and slowing down of rhythm in accordance with the progression of conflict. Meanwhile, timing plays a role in creating release through shot placement and longer shot durations after the conflict reaches its peak. Additionally, trajectory phrasing reveals the rising and falling pattern of rhythm in shaping the audience's emotional experience. Thus, editing rhythm in Qodrat 2 not only serves to build visual continuity but also functions as a dramatic element in building tension and eliciting the audience's emotional response.
Sutan Muhammad Aqil Wahyu Nova Riski Copyright (c) 2026 Sutan Muhammad Aqil, Wahyu Nova Riski https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 59 66 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17120 Pangek Sasau as Cultural Identity in an Expository-Style Documentary Film https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17121
This study discusses the creation of an expository documentary film titled "Pangek Sasau as Cultural Identity in an Expository-Style Documentary." In Minangkabau culture around Lake Singkarak, Pangek Sasau is not merely food, but a local identity that reflects how communities live in harmony with their environment. However, most audiovisual documentation about Lake Singkarak focuses on scenic landscapes and tourism, while local culinary culture has rarely been explored in depth. This creative project aims to demonstrate how Pangek Sasau can represent local cultural identity through a structured and argumentative documentary. The filmmaking process follows four production phases: pre-production (including direct fieldwork and interviews with local fishermen and merchants), production, post-production, and distribution. Applying Bill Nichols' expository mode, this film employs voice-over narration and evidentiary editing to construct a persuasive argument about the preservation of local culture. The findings show that this documentary is effective as an educational tool to introduce and protect traditional culinary heritage from being forgotten by younger generations.
Ikrar Qibran Wirja Nugraha FX Yatno Karyadi Fadly Rahmadanu Muhammad Hamdanu Syakirin Copyright (c) 2026 Ikrar Qibran Wirja Nugraha, FX Yatno Karyadi, Fadly Rahmadanu, Muhammad Hamdanu Syakirin https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 67 74 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17121 Visual Composition Analysis in Avengers: Endgame to Enhance Visual Aesthetics https://ejournal.uinmybatusangkar.ac.id/ojs/index.php/kinema/article/view/17143
This study analyzes visual composition in enhancing visual aesthetics in the film Avengers: Endgame (2019), directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Film, as a medium of mass communication, conveys meaning not only through narrative and dialogue but also through visual language. This study applies Bruce Block’s Visual Structure Model, which identifies seven core visual elements: space, line, shape, tone, color, movement, and rhythm. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with documentation of selected scenes and in-depth interviews with film practitioners as primary data sources. Data validity was ensured through source triangulation. The findings reveal that each visual element functions systematically and progressively to support narrative development and emotional communication. Space is constructed through deep layered compositions creating depth and immersion; lines guide emotional tone from stability to tension; shapes distinguish organic versus technological worlds; tone controls dramatic intensity through planned contrast ratios; color builds psychological mood through progressive palette shifts across narrative phases; camera movement functions as emotional semiotics placing audiences within the action; and rhythm governs the dramatic temporal arc from grief to resolution. These elements do not operate in isolation but form a coherent visual system that produces aesthetic experience simultaneously with narrative meaning. Interviews with film practitioners confirm that the effectiveness of visual composition depends on the coherence of all elements, careful pre-production planning, and the integration of cinematography with editorial thinking. The study concludes that visual composition in Avengers: Endgame constitutes an active communicative structure that deepens audience emotional experience and strengthens narrative meaning.
Nolly Medya Putra Anri Fadini Copyright (c) 2026 Nolly Medya Putra, Anri Fadini https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0 2026-06-10 2026-06-10 5 1 75 87 10.31958/kinema.v5i1.17143
