"MALAKOK": MULTICULTURAL CONCEPTS BASED ON LOCAL WISDOM IN MINANGKABAU COMMUNITY

Abstract

West Sumatra is one of 34 provinces in Indonesia which has the challenge ofcultural pluralism.Thisischaracterizedbythediversityofsocialidentities,variation oftribeswho live in this area, and the global oriented lifestyle. This opinion can be regardedasa character representation of Indonesian society that is varied rangingfrom homogeneous, heterogeneous, pluralistic up with multicultural. The variationspeople often become sensitive to the issue of social harmony. But it is not so┬á inWest Sumatra.Astudyconductedfiveyearsago,withthescopeofWestSumatra,isstill relevant to discuss here, that is the concept of a multicultural society inthe Minangkabaucommunityinteractingwithothercultures,knownasÔÇ£malakokÔÇØ.ThispaperwilldiscussavarietyofÔÇ£malakokÔÇØpatternsfoundinthevariousregionsinWest Sumatra(Pasaman,Dharmasraya,Solok,andPesisirSelatan).ThefindingofthisstudyconsistedofftheconceptofmulticulturalasalocalwisdominMinangkabau society which┬á is reflected in the socio-cultural of malakok as a means of integration of immigrant communities with indigenous people. The existence ofÔÇ£MalakokÔÇØ becomesmoreobviouswiththecurrentgovernmentpolicycalled"BacktoNagari". Thispolicyisanattempttorevivethetraditionalleadershiproleinthesystemof public administration inMinangkabau.
