THE ANALYSIS OF STUDENTSÔÇÖ MATHEMATICS LITERACY IN SMP NEGERI BUKITTINGGI AS A REFLECTION OF PREPARATION TO FACE GLOBALIZATION ERA OF THE 21st CENTURY

Abstract

This research was formed the background of the low ability of mathematics literacy
of Indonesian students based on PISA International survey. The researcher was
interested in doing the research how the mathematics literacy ability of the students
of public junior high schools (SMP Negeri) in Bukittinggi was and what the factors
influenced on it. The research was conducted to describe the mathematics literacy
ability of the students of public junior high schools in Bukittinggi and find out the
factors influenced on it. The research done was qualitative quantitative descriptive.
The schools choosen was done based on Purposive Sampling. The school choosen as
the research sample was SMP Negeri 1 Bukittinggi. The subject of the research was
grade IX consisted of 62 students. The research instrument was test, observation and
interview. The technique of data analysis was descriptive statistics. Based on the
analysis done, the average result was only 36,24% questions answered well, with the
average mark 31,87. The greatest studentsÔǃ percentage in answering the questions
were in the under second level and the smallest were in the above third level. These
results indicated that the studentsÔǃ mathematics literacy ability in SMP Negeri
Bukittinggi was still relatively low. Based on the human competence 21st century,
these results also reflected that the students of SMP Negeri Bukittinggi did not have
enough preparation in facing the globalization era of the 21st century. The
observation result and interview given concluded that the low ability of the studentsÔǃ
mathematics literacy in SMP Negeri Bukittinggi caused by the lack of teachersÔǃ
knowledge about mathematics literacy and the learning process which was not
related to the real-life contexts of the students.
