Abstract

This research explores Imam Nawawi's ideas in his book at-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Qur'an regarding the etiquette of treating the Qur'an. Applying Sam D. Gill's theory of the functions of scripture, the study examines the Qur'anic etiquette through a literature review approach. The book draws inspiration from the constant engagement of Damascus residents with the Qur'an, which is reflected in Nawawi's work. Divided into ten chapters, nine of which discuss Qur'anic etiquette, the book also elucidates complex terms used by Nawawi. The etiquette of handling the Qur'an as a sacred scripture is analyzed through Gill's informative and performative functions: in the informative function, the Qur'an should be interpreted by qualified figures such as Prophet Muhammad, his Companions, and Qur'anic scholars; in the performative function, emphasis is placed on continuous recitation and preservation without alteration. Additionally, the Qur'an is revered as a healing medium, evidenced by practices like ruqyah, while its misuse outside of Sharia is cautioned against. This study contributes to understanding the reverence and application of Qur'anic teachings, suggesting further research explore similar themes using alternative theoretical frameworks for comprehensive analysis.
