Islamic Business Ethics as a Foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Sharia Companies

Bahtiar Efendi, Ahmad Nawsri

Abstract

Islamic business ethics provides a unique foundation for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Sharia-compliant companies, aligning moral principles with business practices. In Sharia companies, ethical guidelines rooted in Islamic teachings emphasize social justice, fairness, and community welfare, offering a framework that supports both business integrity and societal obligations. This research aims to explore how Islamic business ethics can serve as a basis for CSR practices in Sharia-based organizations, contributing to sustainable and ethical business models that align with Islamic values. A qualitative research approach was adopted, involving case studies of Sharia-compliant companies and interviews with industry experts. Data was analyzed to identify key ethical principles that influence CSR practices, such as accountability (amanah), transparency, and social responsibility. The study examined how these principles are applied within Sharia companies to fulfill both ethical and business objectives. Findings indicate that Islamic business ethics promotes CSR practices that prioritize community welfare, employee rights, and environmental stewardship. Sharia companies that adhere to these principles tend to exhibit greater commitment to CSR, as their ethical guidelines inherently support responsible business conduct. The results highlight the potential of Islamic ethics as a framework for CSR that is both value-driven and effective in meeting societal expectations. The study concludes that Islamic business ethics offers a strong foundation for CSR in Sharia companies, providing a holistic approach that benefits both the company and the wider community. Future research should explore ways to standardize these practices across different sectors.
