Abstract

Parents are primarily responsible for the child's upbringing in the family. Appropriate parenting is a fundamental step in the formation of character. Character formation can be done through the planting of values; both religious values and social values are internalized through the interaction of parents with children. This study aims to describe the pattern of parental care in shaping children's character in the family. The type of research is qualitative research with a qualitative descriptive method. The research informants are all parents who have children aged 9 to 12 years. This research was conducted at Jorong Kenanga, Nagari Lubuk Jantan, districts Lintau Buo Utara. Data were collected by observation and interview. Test the validity of data using triangulation techniques and data analysis using Milles and Huberman's theory. The results showed that parents had applied the pattern of democracy to children by respecting children's opinions. Very few parents apply authoritarian and permissive parenting to children in the family.
