Abstract

The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among university students raises concerns about potential dependence that may threaten intellectual independence and critical thinking skills. This study aims to measure the level of AI dependence among students at FTIK UIN Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar and analyze its implications for group guidance and counseling services. The research employed a quantitative approach with a survey design. The research subjects were 37 students selected using purposive sampling technique. The instrument was an AI dependence scale consisting of 20 items covering four dimensions: cognitive offloading, anxiety without AI, compulsive behavior, and impact on academic independence. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the level of AI dependence among students was in the moderate category with a total mean score of 2.51. The cognitive offloading dimension had the highest score (mean=2.78), followed by impact on academic independence (mean=2.54), anxiety without AI (mean=2.42), and compulsive behavior (mean=2.29). These findings imply the need for group guidance and counseling services integrated with AI literacy programs, strengthening academic self-efficacy, and cognitive-behavioral interventions to prevent the development of pathological dependence among students.
