The Journey of KINEMA: Journal of Communication and Broadcasting

The journey of KINEMA: Journal of Communication and Broadcasting began in 2022, emerging from a growing academic need for a scholarly platform dedicated to the study of communication, broadcasting, and Islamic da‘wah. Published under the auspices of Universitas Islam Negeri Mahmud Yunus Batusangkar, KINEMA was established as an academic endeavor to bring together research findings, conceptual discussions, and critical reflections from scholars and practitioners concerned with the dynamics of communication within society, particularly those intertwined with Islamic values.

In its early years, KINEMA focused on laying a solid foundation for journal management and academic integrity. Its scholarly identity was carefully shaped, an editorial system was established, and a double-blind peer-review process was implemented to ensure the quality and credibility of each published manuscript. Issued biannually, in June and December, the journal gradually positioned itself as a consistent and reliable forum for academic discourse in communication and Islamic broadcasting studies, contributing to the cultivation of a strong research and publication culture.

Over time, the articles published in KINEMA began to reflect the evolving landscape of communication studies. Topics such as media and journalism, organizational communication, new communication technologies, and Islamic da‘wah practices in digital spaces appeared side by side, illustrating the journal’s responsiveness to social change and technological advancement. In this sense, KINEMA has served not merely as a publication outlet, but as an intellectual space where theory, practice, and Islamic perspectives engage in meaningful dialogue.

As part of its commitment to scholarly visibility and accessibility, KINEMA is registered with e-ISSN 2963-9883 and is supported by a DOI prefix (10.31958/kinema). By adopting an open-access publishing model, the journal ensures that its articles are freely accessible to readers worldwide, thereby enhancing the dissemination and impact of scholarly work. Furthermore, KINEMA is indexed in platforms such as Google Scholar, reflecting its ongoing efforts to expand the international reach and citation potential of its publications.

Entering a new phase in 2024, KINEMA underwent significant editorial and layout adjustments aimed at improving both content quality and presentation. Editorial policies were refined, author guidelines were updated, and the peer-review workflow was strengthened to align with contemporary standards of academic publishing. Alongside these developments, the journal’s visual layout was redesigned to enhance readability, consistency, and professional appearance, in keeping with the expectations of modern digital journals.

Today, KINEMA continues its journey with a spirit of sustainability and continuous improvement. Its scope encompasses a broad range of communication studies, including media and journalism, marketing communication, organizational communication, applied communication, cross-cultural communication, and new communication technologies. At the core of this diverse scope lies a strong emphasis on Islamic communication and da‘wah, covering topics such as da‘wah strategies, Islamic message construction, cultural-based da‘wah, and the use of digital media for religious communication.

Through its ongoing development, KINEMA affirms its role as a scholarly journal that not only documents the evolution of communication studies but also seeks to provide direction and meaning for the practice of Islamic communication and da‘wah in the modern era. Built upon its foundation since 2022 and strengthened by continuous improvements from 2024 onward, KINEMA aspires to remain a dynamic, inclusive, and relevant academic platform for the global scholarly community.
