Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of economic growth and population on labor in West Sumatra. This research uses a quantitative method with descriptive and associative approaches. The data used are secondary data obtained from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Sumatra Province during the period 1997–2024. Data collection techniques were carried out through documentation methods, while data analysis techniques used multiple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS application. The tests used in this study include descriptive statistical tests, normality tests, t-tests, F-tests, and coefficient of determination tests (R²). The results showed that partially economic growth had no significant effect on labor in West Sumatra with a significance value of 0.454 > 0.05. Meanwhile, population had a significant effect on labor with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. Simultaneously, economic growth and population had a significant effect on labor with a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05. The coefficient of determination (R²) value of 0.956 indicates that economic growth and population variables are able to explain labor variation by 95.6%, while the remaining 4.4% is influenced by other factors outside the study. Thus, population becomes the more dominant factor affecting labor in West Sumatra compared to economic growth
